Most web designers, and web developers, don't fully understand the techniques of full search engine optimization. They build beautiful sites with lots of flashy graphics that can not rank very well because the underlying page coding and SEO processes are heavily flawed.

Sites in the top 10 positions can expect to get 50 - 60% of ALL the traffic from the search engines for a particular keyword or phrase.

Sites in the top 11 - 30 results can easily expect to get 30 - 35% of all the traffic from the search engines. Anything below that you are lucky to get even a trickle of the search engine traffic available. Of course you could overcome that if you have $1,000's to spend every week on pay per click (PPC) advertising campaigns.

However, rarely can you make any money with ppc campaigns. It is usually a black hole for your advertising budget! It's true that SEO takes a little time to get you large amounts of quality traffic but once it starts it lasts for years. If you spend just 1/100th of that same advertising budget on good SEO techniques you will be 1,000 times further ahead.

Otherwise when you stop spending money on advertising your traffic dries up. With a search engine optimized site you spend the money ONCE and reap the rewards for years. No form of advertising can say that or compete with the low cost of a properly optimized website.
